The Passing of William E. Macaulay: A Deep Loss To Our Very Special Community.
We are deeply saddened to share the news that William E. Macaulay, Chair of the Macaulay Honors College Foundation Board of Trustees, passed away shortly before Thanksgiving.
Bill—as he was known to many of us—was devoted to our students, our mission, and the future of the college; his death is a deep loss to this very special community of honors scholars.
As a graduate of City College, Bill inspired our students with the unlimited possibilities that a CUNY degree can set in motion. As a philanthropist, he transformed honors education by launching our endowment and securing a permanent home for the College. As the founding chairman of our Foundation Board, Bill took great pride in personally congratulating each of our graduates as they crossed the stage at Commencement.
Bill’s remarkable leadership and generosity ensured the best possible education for our students. His dedication to Macaulay Honors College and his wise guidance will be deeply missed.
Foundation Vice Chair and Treasurer Anthony Meyer said, “The entire Macaulay community mourns Bill’s untimely passing. He was our patron, our inspiration and an example to us all. And, speaking personally, he was my friend and mentor.”
